As I sit in my office, looking out the window, the red bird is perched on a branch outside, its head bobbing and moving, looking for the next place to land. It has been a constant in my garden for several months.

He flies to my windowsill, stays long enough to look inside. I guess you can see me because it flies as fast as it gets.

It is a daily affair. I took binoculars to the office so I could stay on top of it. It has a habit of flying towards the same branch of a tree and then flying towards the window. Finally, I was able to capture it in a photo. You have to be quick.

My sister-in-law thinks the red bird is reflected in the window, but my wife thinks otherwise.

You see, the red bird is a symbol of your mother’s spirit. My wife’s mother died many years ago after suffering from heart disease. A few years ago my wife wrote a story about the red bird and what it symbolized to her. “Was your mother trying to tell you something?”

My wife has been fearful and anxious about health problems, especially when it comes to the heart.

I look for the red bird early every morning. We know that it is a bird because of its color and texture. We look for it on the Internet. It also comes and shows us a worm or an insect in its beak, then flies off to feed its little ones.

The last few weeks my wife has been to the doctor. The alarm came when a doctor told him that he found an irregular heartbeat. She was sent to a cardiologist. Tests are currently underway to see if there is a crash.

You firmly believe that the red bird is sending you a message. It comes from the spirit of his mother.

The universe can often convey messages to us through signs. Often times, we are too busy to stop and consider what may or may not be a sign. We can ask the universe for guidance, but not recognize the signal it sends us in response.

Learning the subtle language of signs can help you interpret the guidance the universe sends you. We have all been blessed with a connection that allows the universe to communicate directly with us. However, in order to understand the information transmitted through that connection, we need to learn to pay attention and know what to look for.

To correctly see and interpret a sign, you must open your heart and mind to the universe and invite its guidance into your life. Many of us are blind to the signals we receive because we expect angels or our spirit guides to speak to us in a thunderous voice and tell us exactly what we need to hear.

But the signs are usually from this land and are therefore easier to find. A song lodged in your mind or a number that seems to appear everywhere after asking the universe for guidance may be signs.

Signs can come from the animal world, from strangers, or jump out of a book in the form of a revealing passage. A sign can be a direct answer to one of your questions. Other signs may point you in the right direction, warn you of impending difficulties, or show you a different path. If you want the universe to send you a signal, tell it that you are ready and willing to accept its guidance.

Not everything you hear or see will be a sign. However, if you are receptive and patient, the signals you receive will be easier to recognize. It is important to listen to your intuition. A sign can mean many things to different people, and only you can figure out if the meaning of a sign is for you. As you practice reading the signs and following their guidance, the universe will send more of them your way.

By learning from the example of our winged guides, we can all feel empowered to face daring challenges as we chart adventure courses. Feel the strength of others moving alongside you as their presence empowers your wings during this journey through the sky of life.

When we are hit by unexpected gusts, we can choose to find refuge in the loving haven of friends and family. We can even marvel when an otherwise difficult day passes like a swift wind, as a kindred spirit carves a path for us through the clouds and oncoming rain. If your wings start to hurt on your trip, find someone else to fly ahead for a while. We all move faster when we move together.

While the red bird sign may or may not be her mother’s spirit telling her to watch out for her heart, the symbol is on my wife’s mind. Does your mother warn you about your heart?
