History is a critical part of American society, and it’s an important subject to teach your children. There are many options for us history homeschool curriculum at home, from worktexts to living books and even videos! For example, I love the fact that Khan Academy has become a popular homeschool curriculum, but it also is an excellent resource for supplementing other resources as well.

It’s a great resource to have in your library if you’re looking for some new ideas to add to your study of American history. Some of these resources are geared more towards younger students, while others are targeted at high schoolers. Whatever you choose, be sure to include some hands-on activities and projects as well.

You’ll be surprised at how much your student will retain from reading about real people and their stories, rather than reading boring textbooks that don’t come alive! Luckily, there are lots of great books out there that cover American history from a historical fiction perspective. The best part about these books is that they come with a teacher’s guide, so you don’t have to do all of the heavy lifting yourself! There are plenty of comprehension questions, writing assignments and hands-on activities to keep your child engaged in their study of American history.
I’ve seen the drive-thru history series used with kids as young as 6 or 7 and it has helped them learn about America’s founding fathers in an engaging and interactive way. They’ll find it easy to remember the names and faces of those who helped to shape our nation.
Several of the titles in this series were adapted from popular children’s books, so they are both fun and educational. These titles will get your kids interested in learning about American history and they’ll be able to remember all the facts they’ve learned. These history books are all good choices for a fun read aloud in the late elementary to middle school years. They can be read aloud together as a family, assigned for independent reading, or listened to on an audiobook.
