Here’s a little excerpt from a short story/novel I started and am working on. I don’t want to give away the plot, but this is how the story begins. I don’t have a title for it yet and haven’t worked with it much so be nice! You can leave me your comments and suggestions below. Enjoy!

A drop of cold sweat trickled down the tip of his nose onto the file in front of him. Her head was racing with anticipation of the moments to come. She had been waiting all day for this. The room seemed smaller and less welcoming than usual, the lights blaming me with the glare from her. The only sound in the room was a single fan turning slowly, the wind around his blades swirling toward him, sucking the life out of him. Images of detectives standing across the desk extracting information from the defendant across the table spilled into his head. Another drop of sweat fell on the file. He opened it and looked through its contents again. He had to make sure everything was in order. Make sure they couldn’t blame you for what had happened. The content frightened him like nothing else he had ever experienced in his life. Detailed photographs of the body that lay bloodied and broken in a heap on the snow-covered rocks lay in the archive mocking its very existence. Memories began to flood his head of every moment of the incident. The piercing scream sent chills down his spine. He slammed the file shut, closing his eyes trying to erase the memory from his head.

“Mr. Blackwood, we know what happened,” a man would walk into the room with a sort of evil grin on his face. Detective Johnson was young for a detective. His brown hair was long enough to reach the edges of his dark brown eyes and was messy giving him the look of someone he’d been putting in a lot of overtime or a particularly gruesome case. “We have you and the victim together on the day of the murder. Your footprints where the victim was pushed. Signs of a struggle on the victim’s arms and neck. The only thing we don’t know is why you did it.”

“I did not do it”. It took all the courage and energy in her to stay calm and not panic. Every word out of Detective Johnson’s mouth stabbed at him like tiny pins used to torture. “How many times do I have to tell you my story?”

“At least one more time, Mr. Blackwood.” Detective Johnson snapped back. A smile appeared on his face. “Mr. Blackwood, it looks like your hands are shaking. You’re finally starting to realize you’ve been caught, aren’t you? Seems like a sign of guilt to me. Just remember that after what you did to this poor man, you’re leaving.” .for the rest of your life. And for you that’s a long, long time.”

The detective was leaning against the table still smiling. Dameon Blackwood closed his eyes again, fighting back the tears that seemed to want to scream his innocence. So many thoughts were going through her head. How could she have started this? How did this happen? Flashes of the last ten years began to travel through her mind. It all seemed so long ago when all this mess had started. She didn’t even know the man collapsed in the snow back then. But it was ten years ago that the events leading up to this moment began and ten years ago that Dameon Blackwood’s adventurous life began.
