The El Salvador soccer team has many nicknames. The team was invariably called Seleccion Cuscatleca, La Azul, La Selecta, and Cuscatlecos. The head coach of the team is Carlos de los Cobos and the team captain is Afredo Pacheco. The player with the most caps is Luis Guevara Mora and the team’s top scorer is Jorge “Mágico” Gonzáles. His home ground is the Estadio Cuscatlán. They were ranked 50th in FIFA in 1992 (their highest FIFA ranking) and in 2006, they fell to 169th, their lowest FIFA ranking.

His first international match occurred in Guatemala City, Guatemala on September 14, 1921 against Costa Rica. The Costa Ricans dominated the game with a score of 7-0. The biggest victory they achieved is their match against Anguilla in which they trampled their opponent resulting in a score of 12-0. The match was recently held in their own country on February 6, 2008. However, they tasted a heavy defeat when they met the Hungarian team. That was in 1982 where they had managed to sink just one goal against 10 for Hungary.

The El Salvador soccer team appeared in the World Cup twice, first in 1970 when they won the qualifying match against Honduras that resulted in the infamous Soccer War, and their second World Cup performance occurred in 1982. The proper name of the El Salvador soccer team is the El Salvador National Soccer Team, which is under the direct control of the Salvadoran Soccer Federation. Many soccer stars came from this team, including Pablo Huezo, Santiago Barrachina, and Carlos Escobar. The team was officially born in 1921.
