As you may have read in my previous article, Cricket is played in three formats: Tests, One Day, and T20. To decide the champion of the game, the world cup is being played, in the format of one day. I’ve covered some vital information about their upcoming world cup, which kicks off at the end of this month.

General

The 2019 Cricket World Cup, as of May 30, 2019, is the 12th edition of the Men’s Cricket World Cup. The main event is the most coveted prize in sports and will be played between 10 teams. The world cup is always played in the one day format. The event is held in the ODI format. England and Wales will play the host, for the fifth time overall, and the first time since 1999.

Qualification

As a qualifying criteria, eight teams were automatically qualified based on their international one-day rankings. The last two spots were contested by six teams in the qualifier played in 2018. That was an intensely close contest in Zimbabwe. Six teams were divided into two groups, where each team played two games in the group. The top two teams from each group played in the semifinals, and the winners of the semifinals played in the final.

India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa and Sri Lanka were the automatically qualified teams based on the rankings. West Indies and Afghanistan were those that entered through the qualifying track. Looking at its rich cricket history West Indie forced to enter through rating was a hard pill to swallow for many cricket lovers.

Based on recent form and match winning record, hosts England and India are tagged as favorites to win the competition. Australia, the defending champions, are the dark horses, who may surprise some teams to win the world cup. South Africa have been a force to be reckoned with since their early days in world cricket, never going beyond the semi-finals. Their fans hope that South Africa will break this curse to win a world cup this time.

Summary of the schedule

The event will start on May 30, 2019 and will last for 46 days. Hosts England will play South Africa in the opening match. Two semifinals will be played on July 9 and 11, respectively, and the final will be held on Sunday, July 14.
