In the world of Google and search engines, the goal is to appear at or near the top of the list when someone submits a keyword or phrase searching for a product, service, or information. Most Google users won’t get past the first or second page of results unless they haven’t found what they’re looking for yet.

If you have a travel site, for example, and “travel” and “vacation” are your primary keywords, you’ll find yourself lost to the competition. You may not even find your website on Google unless you search overnight. In order to rank high in Google listings or “dominate” those listings, you need to establish a well-defined niche and have the keywords to match. Having established your niche, you will begin to find that online article marketing really works.

Advertising a “great vacation” anywhere is not going to do it. Whether you include a vacation in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Washington’s San Juan Islands, or a special place in the Caribbean, you’re starting to work toward finding your niche. In reality, your niche is something you know as much or more about than anyone else and can write about using articles. This is called niche article marketing.

Supply and demand play a key role here. Imagine the scenario in which Google and the Internet would have existed at the time the hula hoop was invented. A few press releases from the inventor would have announced the product to the world. People would have googled and typed in “hula hoop”. Guess what? All roads would lead to the inventors’ website. It would have “dominated Google”. Turns out he did pretty well without the help of the network, but you get the idea.

Whether you have a product or service to offer, it has to be something that is in demand and not many providers. It also helps if you know what you’re talking about, which you probably will if it’s your own product or service. High demand, limited competition, and your own credibility can all contribute to a dominant position in Google search.

Starting a successful online marketing business isn’t necessarily easy, and you’re likely to fail if you don’t find your niche early on. A good approach to finding your marketing niche is through the brainstorming process. Let your mind wander freely and think of as many marketing possibilities as you can. Make a list and, once done, analyze the supply and demand possibilities for each item.
