What is MHMR?
Mental retardation, the second part of this acronym, represents the state of a person when they do not have the same mental capacity as other people. Generally, you may have a hard time making decisions for yourself, doing daily tasks yourself, and participating in activities designed for others your age. This disease is usually congenital; children with mental retardation learn and develop more slowly than other children. They need help with their daily activities, such as eating, dressing, talking, and using the bathroom, for longer than other children their age. They also need special education that addresses their special needs and helps them thrive in their own way. People with mental retardation are not different in any way, they simply have a deficit in certain functions, learning that can take longer. They are not meant to be isolated from society at large.
