In my previous two articles in this series, I highlighted the importance of writing clear Directors and Limiters for your spell and choosing the correct symbols for your spell. Paying attention to both will help you cast stronger magic spells. In this article, the third in the series, I cover the basics of cleaning yourself, your tools, and your space when it comes to casting your spell.

The importance of magical cleansing

Casting a well-written spell in an area full of junk energy is like eating a good meal in the middle of a kennel. It’s totally incongruous and starts the spell off on the wrong foot. Do not do this!

Magical cleansing is important to all aspects of your spell, including yourself, your tools, and your space. Most magical practitioners develop, over time, some sort of cleansing ritual that helps prepare them to cast a spell. The bigger the spell (or the more you want the spell to accomplish), the more important it is to do a cleansing ritual.

magically cleanse you

As a being, you are a Spirit with a body and a mind. Before casting a spell, it is important that you cleanse these three parts of yourself. Personal cleanliness is, well, a very personal matter, and you should think about how you want to do this.

Your personal cleansing may include a meditation to calm the mind, an invocation to your personal guides and totems to support your Spirit, and a scented bath to cleanse your body. Some people also like to cleanse themselves with the smoke of burning sage and pine resin, in addition to consecrated water. Other people like to use essential oils and candles. Once you’ve cleansed yourself, consider dressing in a special ritual outfit to cast your spell. Choosing clothing in colors relevant to the purpose of your spell always helps. For example, if you want a lot of power, choose a fire color, like sunny yellow or bright red.

Magically clean your tools

To cast strong magic spells, your magic tools must be clean of junk energy. Consider what tools you will need to cast your spell. Will you need a Divination Bowl, Athame, Wand, Fire Bowl or Crystal? Then consider how you will clean your tools. For example, some wizards keep their crystals in pewter boxes to keep them clean. Others dip their crystals in consecrated water or bury them in a garden during a lunar cycle to cleanse them. If you are going to use a wand, decide if you need to clean it by passing it through smoke from burning pine resin and sage. Regardless of how you clean your magical tools, make sure they are clean and ready before you cast your spell.

Magically cleaning your space

Creating a sacred space is one of the most important factors in casting a strong spell. If you are going to use a room in your house to cast your spell, such as the altar room, make sure you cleanse it with four items before casting your spell. This includes smoking it with burning pine resin and sage, as well as throwing consecrated water on the walls. Also, some practitioners like to energetically clear the space with their athame, clearing the area of any junk psychic residue.

As with all magical acts, take your time and be sure to clean yourself, your tools, and your space thoroughly and carefully before casting your spell. A spell cast in a clean environment will meet much less resistance and produce better results.

Learning to use, clean, and maintain magical tools such as the Wand, Athame, Chalice, Place, and Bowl of Fire is important to the proper working of spells. I suggest you learn more about these tools and how to use them before doing heavy spell work.
